Jacob


Jacob makes me laugh! He is so "precise." At four, he has an amazing grasp on the concept of subtle humor. He likes order. He can figure out a puzzle in no time flat. His understanding of "technicalities" is already keeping me and Franco on our toes -- especially when those technicalities work to his advantage! And he is gentle and loves to hug and give smoochies.

This past Sunday, we were at my mom's house putting up a swingset (or, I should say, Franco and my mom were putting up the swingset, while I was trying to keep the kids occupied and out of the way!). At one point, I had Jacob on my shoulders and had taken him to a rose bush . . .

Me: Hey, Jacob, do you see the roses? What color are they?

Jacob: Red!

Me: That's right! Can you count them?

Jacob (rather quickly): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
[there were only four roses]

Me: No, count them again

Jacob: [heavy sigh] 1, 2, 3

[now I realize he is deliberately "skipping" the correct answer]

Me: No! You know how many there are! Count them right!

Jacob (very quickly): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, . . .

Me [interrupting]: What are you doing? There aren't that many roses!

Jacob (now sounding rather annoyed with me): Mommy, I'm counting the leaves!

[ahem]
