The Stones

About two weeks before preschool began, we received a letter from the preschool teacher asking that each child find a stone to bring to preschool on the first day of class. The kids were to find a stone, place it in a snack sized zip-lock baggie, and place a piece of paper in the bag with their name on it. Jacob and Grace had a great time looking for stones -- I think we ended up with enough for a rock garden at home! (And, for any of you who know Franco, you know we already have a plethora of stones -- given Franco's proclivity to collect all sorts of things -- including stones! In fact, I think he may have taken this opportunity to add to his collection . . . )

After a couple weeks at school, the teacher allowed the kids to bring the stones back home. Along with the stones arrived a typed letter with each child's name on it, and their "comment" about their respective stone -- whatever came to the child's mind. When I read the list, I laughed out loud! I found it hysterical, and thought I would share it. Here's what a bunch of 4 year olds said in response to a simple question:

What would you like to say about your stone?

Colton -- It's brown and has white spots and I found it at the beach. And it has a cross and looks like brown.

Bruno -- My Mom found it. There were so many rocks.

Jessica -- Sparkles. Rock.

Nath -- It's really big. It's dark blue. It's really a square.

Bobby -- I will call them rockies. I bringed them to school because you told me I had to bring a rock.

Vasi -- Me and My Mom found it.

Myah -- It's really big and cool. It's from Pearl Lake. It's for me and I like it.

Logan -- It got dirty. It feels bumpy.

Lindsey -- I'm very happy about it. My Mom found it and I'm very happy about it.

Brayden -- It's a Petoskey Stone. When you get water on it, it shines a little bit.

Valina -- (Valina liked to look at the rocks.)

Skye -- I find it at my house. It's kinda dirty.

Grace -- It's a can opener. It's a silly kind of rock.

Jacob -- This rock hops around like a bunny. It hops and hops everywhere. If you open the bag, the rock will jump out of it.

Breanna -- It has holes and it has white. It has marks on it.

Claire -- I found my rock at my Grandma's house and we found a beach by Daddy's work.

. . . and can I just say -- I think my kids' comments truly stand out from the crowd!

For a visual, here is Grace's stone:

Your kids' comments truly do stand out INDEED!! I thought so before I read your opinion, too!

Grace is absolutely right about her rock of course, and Jacob is going to start writing children's fiction, probably in the next year or so. What a prodigy!
